Stratus Ensemble concert to be held Sunday, December 20 at 3:00 p.m.

The Stratus Ensemble will be presenting the December concert in the Brighton Allston Congregational Concert series on Sunday, December 20 at 3:00 p.m. The concert is in the church’s sanctuary, known for its excellent acoustics. Brighton Allston Congregational Church UCC is located at 404 Washington Street in Brighton Center.

The Stratus Ensemble performers are Yhasmin Valenzuela, clarinetist; Deirdre Viau, flute; Paul Jacobs, piano; and Sebastian Chaves, bassoon. The program is an especially varied one, featuring works not only by Bach, Mendelssohn, and Saint-Saëns, but also Messager, Martinu, Villa-Lobos, and Paquito D’Rivera.

All proceeds from the concert benefit the renovation of the Community Supper kitchen. General admission to the concert is $10; students and seniors are $5; low income persons are admitted free. Thanks to the generosity of Citizens Bank, there is parking next door in the Citizens Bank parking lot. Both driving and public transit directions are available at www.brightonucc.blogspot.com.

Yhasmin Valenzuela: A native of Peru, Yhasmin earned her bachelor’s degree at the Lima Conservatory “Josafat Roel Pineda” in both clarinet performance and music education.

She continued her studies in the United States at Texas Christian University where she received her Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance. In 2005, she obtained a Graduate Performance Diploma with distinction at the Longy School of Music. While at Longy, she was a winner of the 2005 Honors Competition.

She has performed with ensembles in Peru, Mexico and the United States, including the Lima Symphony Orchestra, TCU Symphony Orchestra, TCU Wind Ensemble, and the Musica Anatolia Contemporary Ensemble. She was recently invited to perform as a soloist with the UTA Orchestra in Texas.

A founding member of the Stratus Ensemble, she is currently on the faculty at the Westwood Public Schools and at Beaver Country Day School.

Sebastian Chaves: Born and raised in Costa Rica, Sebastian started playing bassoon at age 15 at the National Institute of Music in his hometown San José. He later received a Bachelor in Music Performance and a Bachelor in Music Education degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and Master of Music Performance and Graduate Performance Diploma degrees from the New England Conservatory in Boston.

Sebastian participated in international music programs such as the Tournon-sur-Rhône Music Festival (France), Round Top Music Festival (TX), Interlochen Arts Academy (MI), Chautauqua Institute (NY), Stuttgart Festival Ensemble (Germany), Aspen Music Festival (CO) and Verbier Music Festival (Switzerland).

Sebastian is a substitute player with the Boston Philharmonic, Opera Boston, the Boston Ballet and Boston Modern Orchestra Project; he is currently principal bassoon of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, the Indian Hill Orchestra, the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Plymouth Philharmonic and the Neponset Valley Philharmonic. Sebastian lives in Brighton with his wife, and enjoys horror movies, soccer and surfing.

Bach!

Bach! an evening of Bach for the clarinet
The Music at Brighton Allston Congregational series begins its 2009–2010 concert season with “Bach! an evening of bach for the clarinet” on Saturday, September 12 at 8:00 p.m. Clarinetist Steven Jackson and pianist Biljana Milovanovic will present an all-Bach recital in the church’s sanctuary.

Who was Johann Sebastian Bach?
One of the three B's of classical music?
Imperious face beneath an imposing wig?
Composer of the “Toccata and Fugue in D minor,” heard in countless Hollywood horror movies?

Yes, but less well known is the man as he was in life. Clarinetist Steven Jackson and pianist Biljana Milovanovic present a concert of his music with readings of documents written by Bach himself and those who knew him. Through music and words we meet Bach the working musician, poet, pipe smoker, school teacher, father of twenty children, bearing life's everyday joys and trials. Beneath the legend we see an ordinary man serving music, the betterment of all and God's will, while embracing life with passion.

The church is located at 404 Washington Street in Brighton Center MA. General admission is $10; students and seniors $5; low income free admission. All proceeds from the concert series will benefit the renovation of the Community Supper kitchen.

Free parking is available next door in the Citizens Bank parking lot; our thanks to Citizens for making this available. For directions to the church, please click on the link to the left.

Rethinking the Fourth of July: a concert of American solo clarinet music
America—a union of singular voices. As our coins say, “E Pluribus Unum”: out of many, one. So our music has been the song of the solitary, self-directed voice seeking its audience. Throughout our history, this nation has sung again and again through the solo clarinet. Primitive, whimsical, curious, pleading, playful, daring, sometimes abstract and learned, the clarinet has been the solo voice of America.

Clarinetist Steven Jackson performs a musical mix that spans nearly 200 years of our musical heritage. Musical iconoclast John Cage, a Benny Goodman improvisation, a Shaker melody, the great film composer Miklos Rozsa, America’s two most celebrated composers of classical music Aaron Copland and Elliott Carter, minstrel tunes—all and more will be heard in a concert that tells the unity and richness of our country.

This will be the encore concert in our 2008–2009 series. It will be held on Wednesday, July 1 at 8:00 here at the Brighton Allston Congregational Church. For directions, please click here.http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=100202720826331987121.0000011276ca04a6421a4&ll=42.354707,-71.155143&spn=0.014176,0.028925&z=15&om=1

Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for seniors and students, and free to low income people. The proceeds from the concert benefit the restoration of the church's Community Supper kitchen.

West Gallery Quire concert, June 3 at 8:00 p.m.

The final concert in the 2008-2009 “Music at Brighton Allston Congregational” series will be the West Gallery Quire performing on Wednesday, June 3 at 8:00 p.m. The concert will be held in the sanctuary of the Brighton Allston Congregational Church, 404 Washington Street, Brighton Center. The church is served by several bus routes, including #57 and #86; free parking is available next door in the Citizens Bank parking lot. For directions to the church, please see the column to your left.

The West Gallery Quire performs, not surprisingly, West Gallery music. This is traditional sacred music from English village churches of the 18th and early 19th centuries. As an attempt to introduce church music into rural areas, choirs were formed from the local residents. The village instrumentalists were often also recruited as a means of assisting the singers. The mixed ensemble of singers and players usually performed from a gallery at the west (rear) end of the church, so this music is now known as West Gallery music.

It is what Thomas Hardy’s characters, or Jane Austen and her preacher father, heard on a Sunday morning! Novelist Thomas Hardy came from a family of church musicians, and referred to this music frequently in his novels; in particular, Under the Greenwood Tree depicts the life and death of a typical church band and quire.

The music is powerful, hearty and rhythmic. Some of the tunes sound like folk-Handel (also known as “Barnyard Baroque”), others are stark and simple (much like Appalachian folk-hymns), and many are in the fuguing style which also became popular in late eighteenth-century New England.

Instruments were quite commonly used, both to support the singers and to play interludes and verses on their own: bowed strings, flutes, woodwinds, serpents, trombones, and concertinas are the most suitable, but anything that can play a melodic line is usually welcome.

For more information on West Gallery Quire, visit www.laymusic.org/wordpress/?page_id=500.

The suggested donation is $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors and students, and free to those of low income. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the renovation of the church’s Community Supper kitchen. Each week the Community Supper opens its doors to all who wish to join us for a tasty, nutritious meal. Every Wednesday evening at 6, approximately 60 guests are served.

Natraj concert on Sunday, May 3 at 3

On Sunday, May 3, the world-jazz ensemble Natraj brings its internationally-acclaimed blend of Indian classical music, West African music, and contemporary jazz to the Brighton Allston Congregational Church, 404 Washington Street, Brighton Center, MA. The concert begins at 3:00 p.m. and is part of the church’s concert series to benefit the renovations to the Community Supper kitchen. Tickets are $10 (general admission), $5 (students, seniors), and free (low income). For tickets and information, call (617) 254-4046; directions to the church, both by car and public transit, can be found at in the box to the left under "Learn more about us and the UCC." We are grateful to Citizens Bank for making free parking available in their parking lot next door.

From Boston to Toronto, and India to Ghana, Natraj has delighted listeners in clubs, concert halls, and festivals since 1987. Selected as Boston’s Best Jazz Band by the Improper Bostonian, Natraj captivates and excites audiences with its exotic textures, accessible melodies, and rhythmic energy. Natraj seamlessly melds the classical music of India, traditional music from West Africa, and contemporary jazz to create its own unique and infectious style. Hard-driving African grooves and graceful Indian ragas meet in the band’s expansive jazz conception. “A seamless blend of jazz and Indian music… delightfully unconventional…” — Jazziz.

Appearances include India’s JazzYatra and Prayojana International Music Festival; Ghana’s PANAFEST; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; and the Guelph Jazz Festival, Guelph, Canada. At its recent performance in the LearnQuest Music Festival, Natraj was featured with special guests, icons of Indian-classical bamboo flute, Shashank and Pt. Ronu Majumdar. Natraj has been featured on the nationally syndicated program, The World (PRI/BBC/WGBH-FM); Doordarshan (Indian National TV); Maine Things Considered (Maine Public Radio); South Asian Newsweek (CFMT-TV, Toronto); and Radio Mid-Day (Mumbai, India). “We heard the future of jazz... we heard the future of world music... a spellbinding tapestry... a jazz hybrid of celebration and reflection.” —Times of India.

In this concert, Natraj features the raga-influenced soprano saxophone of Phil Scarff; the warm, nimble solidity of bassist Michael Rivard; the tabla and multipercussion wizardry of Jerry Leake; and high-energy groove of drummer Bertram Lehmann.
